Probably the most astonishing aspects of bubba is the fact that he hits the ball a prodigious distance, using a very unique swing. He averaged approximately 290 yards of the tee at Augusta National, which is well short of his 313 yard average on the PGA tour. One of the reasons proposed, was that he might have been holding back just a little to place a bigger focus on accuracy. I am one of the doubters that don't exactly accept that. Augusta National are well known for doing everything in their ability to make the golf course play as difficult and long as possible.
One of the tricks the club does to have the course play longer, is to mow the fairways in the direction of the tees. So how does that help you ask? If you have ever played golf on a lush green course, you would have noticed that when the fairway or green is mowed, it will leave dark and light green stripes. When you are looking down a fairway and you see dark and light lines, this means that the dark stripes would be the parts of the fairway that were mowed towards you. As the mower cuts the grass, it also flattens it in the direction it's driving. Whenever you look at a dark line on fairway, you are essentially looking into the grain, giving it the dark appearance. The light lines on the fairway therefore show that that particular area of the grass was mowed away from you and it looks lighter as you are looking down the grain. When a ball lands on a dark stripe, it's restricted since the blades of grass are lying down in the opposite direction in which the ball is travelling.
To ensure that is what the organisers do in the Masters Golf tournament, they cut all of the fairways in the direction of the tees. It must be pretty effective if someone like Bubba Watson Averages 20 yards less than he normally does in the past year.
One of the biggest reasons Bubba is able to hit the ball such great distances, is that he uses the latest golf clubs. Technology changes so much, that the drivers that manufacturers produce every year seem to go straighter and fartherthan the previous model. If you have a driver that's older than 1 . 5 years, I am sorry to say that it is probably already outdated.
